Riitta Rönnqvist

Bio

Since 1999, Riitta has led various prayer music ensembles and projects, ranging from large arena gatherings to intimate spaces of contemplation. A self-taught pianist, she began improvising at the age of six, developing a unique voice rooted in spontaneous expression. Her leadership in Christian music settings spans over two decades, during which her original compositions have become widely used in churches across Finland. Several bands have also released her songs on their own albums.

Since 2021, Riitta has collaborated closely with renowned saxophonist Juhani Aaltonen in the field of improvised prayer music. Together, they have performed live—both onsite and online—well over a hundred times between 2021 and 2025.

In addition to her work in contemplative music, Riitta is also the vocalist of the band Scandinavian Metal Praise. Her vocal style—both delicate and powerful—can be heard in songs like "Yeshua" and "Gethsemane" on the band's latest album.

Riitta's ensembles are often built around her improvised piano playing, creating a dynamic and emotionally rich musical environment. Musicians describe performing with her as a responsive and immersive experience, where sensitivity, strength, diverse atmospheres, and shifting rhythms intertwine naturally in the moment.
